Lab 01 · Alternate route
Explore the Original fast.ai Notebook
100 points · up to 10 bonus points
This is the original-notebook route for Homework 1. Choose it if you want to work closer to the fast.ai Chapter 1 notebook and are comfortable doing more setup and troubleshooting.
You only need to complete one Homework 1 route. The guided route and this alternate route have the same deadline and are both eligible for full credit.
Step 1
Begin in Colab
Open the original Chapter 1 notebook.
- Choose File → Save a copy in Drive.
- Create a Markdown cell at the very top.
- Write your full name in that cell.
If notebooks are new to you, use the optional Colab quickstart first.
Step 2
Understand the runtime
2.1 · CPU and GPU · 10 points
Choose Runtime → Change runtime type → T4 GPU if available. Open a second copy of the notebook and leave that one on CPU.
In a few words and one screenshot, explain how you can tell which notebook is using which runtime. Find the GPU RAM display if it is available.
2.2 · Files and Drive · 10 points
The original notebook may offer to connect Google Drive. This is not required for the homework. Open the Files panel on the left and locate the default files, including sample_data.
After navigating into the larger folder tree, where did sample_data go? Explain the directory change in a few words. You may ask an AI assistant to help you understand the interface.
Step 3
Investigate the pet classifier
Run the cells above “What Is Machine Learning?” to reach the cat/dog classifier.
3.1 · Repair or explain · 10 points
The book version may use this stand-in instead of a live upload button:
uploader = SimpleNamespace(data=['images/chapter1_cat_example.jpg'])Does it work in your copy? If not, identify the error and describe your fix or workaround. It is acceptable to preserve an unresolved error if you explain what you tried.
3.2 · Test predictions · 10 points
Test several cat/dog images. Before each run, write down what you expect. Include at least one image for which the predicted probability is between 0.1 and 0.9.
Paste each selected image with its prediction score and briefly discuss whether the score matches your expectation.
Step 4
Tour the other models
Do not train the IMDB example; it can exceed the free Colab runtime. Inspect its code and saved output instead.
Continue through the rest of the notebook. Make a short list of the experiments, including the pet classifier. For each, record:
- the task,
- the dataset or data source,
- the model or learner, and
- whether you ran it or inspected the saved textbook output.
If the runtime is stable, run the tabular and recommendation examples. For segmentation and IMDB, inspection is enough.
Step 5
Reflect in your own words
Read the Chapter 1 text alongside the notebook.
Step 6
Submit in Canvas
- Your completed
.ipynbnotebook. - A PDF of the notebook showing your own execution results.
Use File → Download for the notebook and File → Print → Save to PDF for the PDF. Inspect the PDF before submitting.
Credit any AI tool you used and what it helped with. Do not present saved textbook outputs as results you ran yourself.
Optional · up to 10 bonus points
Prepare for Lab 2: install VS Code, create a GitHub account, sign in from VS Code, and practice creating a repository with one commit. No API account or paid service is required.
